Hank Meals

Hank Meals is an archaeologist, historian, writer, photographer, and artist who has lived and worked in the Sierra Nevada foothills for forty years. Moving there with his young family in 1968, he was an original pioneer of the California back-to-land movement. He exhaustively photographed his experience and the burgeoning community of the Sierra Nevada foothills—photographs that now comprise an invaluable historical archive. Meals is also an avid hiker and author and publisher of several trail guides, including The River: Hiking Trails and History of the South Fork of the Yuba River (2008), and Yuba Trails 1 & 2 (1993, 2001). He worked for many years as an archaeologist for the Tahoe National Forest.
