Novella Carpenter

Novella Carpenter is the author of the best-selling memoir Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer (Penguin Press, 2009). Inspired by her hippie back-to-the-land parents, studies with Michael Pollan at Berkeley’s environmental journalism program, and her romance with Oakland’s neglected urban landscape, Carpenter transformed an overgrown and abandoned lot in West Oakland into a thriving farm. Carpenter writes the blog GhostTown Farm, and is a founding member of Biofuel Oasis Cooperative in Berkeley. Her next book, written with Willow Rosenthal of City Slicker Farms and due out in Spring 2011, is a how-to urban farm manual. She lives in Oakland.
